Why does my slow motion video look step-framed?

Most video is shot at 30 frames per second (or 25 PAL). If you slow your clip down to 1/2 speed those 30 frames are used to to make 2 seconds of video instead of 1 second. Each frame in this case must be duplicated in order to create the 2 seconds, causing the step-framed effect. The slower you set the slow motion, the worse the problem appears.

The solution is to shoot at a higher frame rate:

If you shoot at 60 fps then you could slow as low as 1/2 speed without duplicating frames (at 30fps export)
If you shoot at 120 fps then you could slow as low as 1/4 speed without duplicating frames (at 30fps export)
If you shoot at 240 fps then you could slow as low as 1/8 speed without duplicating frames (at 30fps export)

In these cases you will get a super-smooth slow motion.
